October 2009

On Saturday the 3rd of October we held our first annual Open Day here at The Gap Health and Racquet Club. Throughout the day there were a host of activities for young and old including competitions and games on the tennis courts, group fitness demonstrations, free massages from All Sports Physio, free Personal Training and of course the 12 Hour Carpark Bike Ride for Red Cross Emergency Services.

From the bottom of our hearts, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who participated on the day. We raised over $4,000 for Red Cross and had a fabulous time doing it.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members who took advantage of our membership offers on the day. Welcome to our club!

Instructor Profile

Gillian Nasato

Registered Nurse
Personal Trainer
Body Attack Instructor

I am married to David and have two teenagers Joshua 17 and Aliza 15.

I love living in The Gap as it reminds me of my childhood spent growing up in Roma. I work full time as a Nurse Manager at The Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital and I work part time at Your Time Personal Training at Ashgrove with Sue Rogers. I teach Body Attack every Saturday morning at 8:15 am as well as fill ins when required. I love my class and the members who attend. They are hilarious fun and seem to enjoy my humour and frivolity. I'd like to think that I was a positive role model to our members and that they enjoy coming to my class.

I hate Friday evenings as I spend them learning my choreography. All of my family know the moves as it plays continually on our TV. I am a very visual learner therefore the DVD's get quite worn out ! My kids know the Les Mills instructors by name!

I am very passionate about health and fitness and I love to assist others to better health and well being. My "real" job at the hospital is busy and stressful and often our patients are very unwell but my "play" jobs are fun and exciting. A nice balance for me.

My Likes include - Thai Food, Beach Holidays, Movies and "Honey Soy Chicken Chips" [I don't share well]

My Dislikes are house work, lazy people and heights.

I was a member of the Gap Health & Racquet long before I started to teach BA. I think that our Gym is close/accessible , friendly, non threatening to newcomers, relaxed and casual. Our members really reflect the style of our gym very well.

PT Profile

Welcome to our new Personal Trainer: Lachie Rogers!

I completed my certificate in 2006. I love being personally trained because I know I can work harder when someone is there to push me along. I enjoy training people in many different ways, as long as we're focused on achieving your goals. Any program I write is a specially tailored program to suit your needs.

Rugby is a big part of my life, and I have travelled a lot in my pursuit of playing the sport, competing in the Dubai International 7s tournament in 2007, and in the Quebec Champions League (Canada) in 2008. I have been coaching rugby union at Brisbane Grammar School since 2005, and recently finished a coaching stint over in Montreal with the Varsity McGill University team. I currently play for the Ashgrove GPS club.

I currently study Creative and Professional Writing at QUT, and am also trying my hand at French!

Chicken With Cabbage Slaw

Serves 4
Hands-On Time: 25m
Total Time: 30m

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken cutlets
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons fish sauce (optional)
  • 3 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 1 red red capsicum, cut into strips
  • 1 green capsicum, cut into strips
  • 3 shallots, halved and cut into 4-inch strips
  • 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves

Directions

  1. Heat pan on high. Rinse the cutlets and pat dry with paper towels. Pound the cutlets to an even thinness. Place in pan.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of the rice vinegar, and the fish sauce (if using).
  3. Transfer 2 tablespoons of the glaze to a large bowl and stir in the remaining rice vinegar. Add the cabbage, capsicums, shallots, and coriander and toss. Cover and refrigerate.
  4. Pour about 1 tablespoon of the remaining glaze into a small bowl; set aside as a finishing sauce. Brush the chicken with the glaze that remains, brushing occasionally, until cooked through, 5 to 8 minutes. Spoon the reserved glaze over the top. Serve with the slaw
